Soil to Soul: A Hope-Forward Food Manifesto from The Pantry

We’ve spent the last decade up to our elbows in coriander, coconut milk and sand. We’ve slung slushies in a heatwave, fed festival fields in the rain and watched more sunsets from a service hatch than we can count.

But The Pantry – by Kismet Cabana – is a new chapter. Same hearts and hands, new lens. This time, we’re zooming out from “What’s for dinner?” to “What kind of food system are we feeding?”

This is our Soil to Soul manifesto.

Why Soil to Soul?

“Field to fork” has had its moment. It’s a neat phrase, but it often stops at the plate. Soil to Soul is our alternative – and our commitment.

  • Soil: how the land is cared for, who farms it, what’s growing and what’s being returned.
  • Soul: how that food makes us feel, the stories behind it, and the impact on our health, our community and our island’s future.

It’s not just romance; it’s resilience. Jersey’s rural strategy now explicitly recognises farming and the rural economy as part of our cultural heritage and long-term wellbeing – not just “nice to have”.Visit Jersey

We were genuinely blown away to be name-checked among the Regen Prize finalists this year – it felt like a little nudge from the universe saying: “Alright then, you’re in this. Do it properly.”

A new chapter, not a new religion

We’re not arriving here as overnight converts.

  • We’ve worked with local suppliers for years – from growers and butchers to dairy and drinks.
  • We’ve cooked at events that champion Jersey produce, and we’ve seen first-hand how much graft sits behind every crate of veg and every churn of cream.
  • We’ve also watched brilliant chefs and hospitality businesses quietly doing the right thing – supporting local, cutting waste, experimenting with cover crops, regen grazing, and smarter tech – often in silos, with no shared story. Visit Jersey

The Pantry is our chance to join that up. To move from “We buy local when we can” to “Our whole model is built around Soil to Soul.”

We’re not here to compete with other local champions – Genuine Jersey members, farm shops, restaurants or festivals – but to be part of a stronger web.

The backdrop: Jersey’s food system is shifting

A few things that give us real hope right now:

  • Farmers are being backed to change.
Jersey’s Rural Support Scheme is now geared around credits for things like soil health plans, regenerative practices, local food crops and skills – not just acreage. That means public money rewarding farmers for climate, biodiversity and food security wins, not just volume.
  • Nature is part of the brief.
From 30+ miles of new hedgerows to cover-crop competitions measuring real gains in biodiversity, pollinator numbers and soil organic matter, there’s proof that good farming here can boost wildlife as well as yields.
  • Policy and tech are catching up.
The farming conference this year was full of talk about energy-efficient kit, precision applications, better data, new loan schemes and support for innovation – not tech for tech’s sake, but tools that free up time, reduce waste and protect margins. Visit Jersey+1
  • Culture is catching up too.
The National Trust’s new strategy explicitly frames farming as part of Jersey’s living heritage and identity, not just “background scenery”. If we lose farmers, we don’t just lose food – we lose part of who we are.Visit Jersey+1

That’s the context The Pantry is stepping into. We’re not trying to invent a movement – it’s already here. We’re choosing to put both feet in.

What Soil to Soul means at The Pantry

This is how we’re turning big ideas into everyday habits:

1. Championing Jersey first (and still loving the rest of the world)

We’re obsessed with global flavours – from jerk and jambalaya to ramen and rogan josh – and we’re not about to stop. But whenever we can, we want:

  • Local veg, fruit and meat in our ready meals, freezer favourites and specials, with clear labelling of origin.
  • Transparent sourcing – you’ll be able to see which farms and producers you’re supporting when you shop with us.
  • Seasonal menus & product rotations that flex with the island’s harvest calendar, not fight it.

Global recipes. Local roots. Soil to Soul.

2. Making local food genuinely accessible

“Buy local” shouldn’t be a luxury slogan. We’re building systems that make it easier to support Jersey farmers and producers in real life, including:

  • Subscription boxes that bundle frozen favourites, pantry staples and fresh local produce into predictable, budget-friendly orders.
  • Honest pricing that reflects the true value of local ingredients, while using batch cooking, freezing, and minimal waste to keep things fair.
  • Click & collect and delivery so supporting local doesn’t depend on you having a spare Saturday morning and a car.

3. Leaning into circular, not linear

The Pantry is designed around a circular mindset:

  • Cooking in efficient batches, using the whole ingredient wherever we can.
  • Designing recipes that work beautifully frozen – cutting food waste at our end and yours.
  • Working with local growers to use wonky, surplus and “too much of a good thing” crops in sauces, soups and stews.
  • Exploring packaging options and refill ideas that reduce single-use where practical, without compromising food safety.

4. Telling the whole story

Soil to Soul is also about conversation.

On our website, socials and in-store, we’ll be sharing:

  • Stories from the farmers, growers and makers we work with.
  • Simple explainers on things like cover crops, carbon, soil health and why hedgerows matter.
  • Updates on Jersey’s food and farming policy in plain language – what schemes exist, how they support the people growing your food, and why that matters.

We’ll also point you to others doing brilliant work – from Genuine Jersey and Farm Jersey to regen events and talks – because a resilient food system needs many voices, not one loud one.youtube.com

If you’d like to see where a lot of this thinking comes from, you can watch talks from recent Jersey Farming Conferences on Farm Jersey’s YouTube channel. Search for:

The session on sustainability, cover crops and biodiversity (with Albert Bartlett & Jersey Royal).

The keynote from the National Trust for Jersey on farming, heritage and the 2036 vision.

The update from the Rural & Marine team on the Rural Support Scheme and future funding for farming.

They’re not our videos – but they’re very much part of our Soil to Soul story.

An invitation, not a lecture

We’re not pretending to have this all figured out. We’re learning, tweaking recipes, building new systems and working with farmers, policy folks and fellow hospitality businesses as we go.

But we are clear on this:

  • Jersey’s farmers and food producers are not just “suppliers” – they’re partners and culture-keepers.
  • Local food isn’t just about nostalgia – it’s about climate resilience, community health and economic sanity.
  • Hospitality can be a huge part of the solution if we stop working in silos and start sharing knowledge, customers and courage.

So here’s our ask:

  • Choose local when you can.
  • Ask where your food comes from.
  • Support businesses that back Jersey farmers in meaningful ways.
  • And if you’re another chef, grower, retailer or organiser who feels the same – come and talk to us.

The Pantry is our way of putting Soil to Soul into practice. We hope you’ll be part of it.
